Hot alkaline black oxide coating, also known as blackening, is one of the most common and effective methods of surface finishing for steel components through chemical oxidation. The process is designed not only to enhance the appearance of treated parts but also to significantly improve their corrosion resistance, especially when used in combination with suitable protective oils or preservatives.

During the black oxide process, a conversion iron oxide layer is formed, providing components with an attractive, uniform black finish while protecting them against environmental influences. This treatment is ideal for a wide range of industrial applications where both enhanced corrosion protection and a high-quality appearance are required. The result is a smooth, uniformly black surface that meets the demanding requirements of modern engineering and manufacturing.

  • Hot alkaline black oxide coating (blackening) is one of the most widely used methods of surface protection for steel components. Its primary purpose is to improve the appearance of treated parts while increasing their corrosion resistance when used in combination with suitable protective oils. The process results in the formation of a conversion iron oxide layer.

  • No dimensional changes.
  • Polished surfaces retain their original finish.
  • Corrosion resistance of the hot alkaline black oxide coating: 160–180 hours in a salt spray test according to ASTM B117 / DIN 50021 after impregnation with a protective oil.
